Doctor Biography

Prof..Dr Shawkat Ara Shakoor Milly did her MBBS from Chittagong Medical College in 1990.  She was conferred Commonwealth Scholarship and went to UK in 2001.  She did her MSc in Community Eye Health at International Center For Eye Health (ICEH) under University College London (UCL). She was mentored by Prof Clare Gilbert. This is the time she got introduced to Global Vision 2020 program for prevention of blindness. Since her return from UK she is involved in different activities of national prevention of blindness program in Bangladesh.  She is the Deputy Program Manager of National Eye Care and involved in advocacy, planning, monitoring, evaluation of different eye care programs, outreach screening program organization and School sight testing.

In 2007 Prof. Shakoor completed MS in Ophthalmology from BSMMU. She did her short term fellowship in Cornea and anterior segment at Islamia Eye Hospital in 2007. Prof Shakoor received training in cataract surgery at Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology, Nepal in 2012.  She has been working in Ocular plastic surgery since 2007 and did her Fellowship in Ocular Oncology and Oculoplastics at Center For Sight, Hyderabad in 2014. She was mentored by renowned Ocular Oncologist Dr Santosh G Honavar.  She is the lone fellowship trained ocular oncologist in Bangladesh and believes in delivering comprehensive service for the cancer patients.  Her expertise includes Retinoblastoma, other ocular cancers, squint, thyroid eye diseases, ptosis, diseases of the eye lid , lacrimal system and Orbit, etc.

Prof. Dr Shawkat Ara Shakoor Milly has a large number of national and international peer reviewed publications and has been a speaker in a number of international meetings as the Asia Pacific Academy, the SAARC Ophthalmological Meetings, All India Ophthalmological Society meetings, World Ophthalmological congress, ACOIN meetings, IAPB congress etc.  She is the member of the Editorial board of “Ophthalmic Examination Protocol”, “Treatment Protocol in Ophthalmology”, “Cataract Surgical Protocol”, “Primary Eye Care Manual”, “Counseling in Eye Care: Manual”. She did 3 Cross sectional studies on Refractive Error in Children in Bangladesh. At present she is working as the Principal Investigator of the “National blinding eye disease survey of Bangladesh adults’ a WHO funded national survey.

She is the recipient of “ Firoza Jalil Memorial Award, 2003” by OSB, Australian Leadership Award Fellowship (ALAF) in 2010 and  “Prof M A Matin Indo Bangla Friendship Oration Award” conferred by Association of Community Ophthalmologists of India (ACOIN) in 2013 and “APAO Distinguished Service Award 2015”.
