Doctor Biography

Dr. Md. Iftekher Iqbal, a young ophthalmologist (YO), is internationally recognized as one of the country’s Young Glaucoma Specialists and an APAO YO Rising Star by the Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO).

He is primarily affiliated with the Ispahani Islamia Eye Institute and Hospital as a Consultant in the glaucoma department and practices as a Consultant Ophthalmologist (Glaucoma and Cataract) at Bangladesh Eye Hospital.

As a distinguished professional, he is actively involved with teaching and mentoring in fellowship programs for cataracts (Manual Small Incision Cataract Surgery and Phaco) and glaucoma run by his institute.

After completing his M.B.B.S. from Ibrahim Medical College, Dhaka, Bangladesh, he finished his post-graduation (Master in Surgery, M.S.) in Ophthalmology from Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), Dhaka, Bangladesh, and later, a long-term medical and surgical fellowship in glaucoma at the country’s state-of-the-art subspecialized training institute, the Ispahani Islamia Eye Institute and Hospital.

He has a wealth of experience and extensive surgical skills in managing complicated cases, mostly glaucoma and cataract-related ones, as well as with Glaucoma Drainage Devices (GDD), pediatric glaucoma surgeries, and different laser procedures (like LPI, SLT, and cyclophotocoagulation). He is the one in the country right now popularizing the latest Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS) and the pioneer of introducing TrabEx+ in his daily glaucoma-surgical practice. He has a dedicated YouTube channel (link below) for showcasing all the surgical procedures he is doing routinely and updating it regularly.

For his dedication and commitment to the nation as well as to the world as a glaucoma specialist to make people aware of and manage this blinding disease called glaucoma, he is recognized as a Young Glaucoma Expert (YGE), along with an Associate Board Member by the Asia-Pacific Glaucoma Society (APGS) and an Extraordinary Member by the European Glaucoma Society (EGS).

Besides dealing with and managing glaucoma and cataract-related complications, he is passionate about clinical research and ophthalmic photography.

  • - He is also interested in ocular pathologies associated with systemic diseases, rare genetic disorders, and innovative ideas, which are reflected in many of his published research works in the indexed journal.
